safe car travel for dogs?

Does anyone know anyone who uses the Variocage in their car? Its on sale at MightyMite, ha ha, but yeah a leeettle less right now... I'm wondering because this is the way Razz has to travel and we have some BIG trips coming up and I worry constantly about getting rear-ended

Lisa with Kraken and Maicoh has them.
Personally, way too expensive for me. I'm not even one to read the safety specs on the vehicle I buy. I figure in a REALLY bad accident, nothing is going to keep every passenger perfectly safe. So long as everyone is safe and secure on those every day rides where I *don't* get in an accident, I'm happy, so regular wire crates for me. I prefer the wire over vari-kennel or other solid type for visibility and air circulation.

Yeah I wondered about visibility. I REALLY need to see. I'll ask Lisa--I did notice she had a fortress looking thing in her car. Thanks

I also agree, the cost of these things is huge, crazy! I use dog seat belts for short trips. Kurgo, specifically.

It is crazy, but I started to wonder if it was crazy not to. Stella has always ridden belted into the seat in a car-harness, and I wish Razzle could travel that way too... but I am pretty sure with the number and types of things Razzle has chewed he would happy shred the seatbelt and thats probably pretty pricey to replace... I probably will stick with the wire crate...

The dog box is tall enough that I can use full airline types in my car, and I prefer that. If you need to see, that's most important, in my book.

I use airline types for Jodah because if *he* can see too much it's a problem (he chases oncoming traffic, driving is WAY too exciting for him) and because I hate the way wire crates rattle in the car. I've also used tent-style crates for less excitable dogs. As for safety, well, nothing is perfectly safe. We do the best we can. Loose dogs are probably the most unsafe, so any step above that is an improvement.

we started with the airline crates, but the next size up... then I couldn't see well enough... I HATE HATE tailgaters... idiots. they terrify me.

I did a whole post about this years ago (prior to Rumble I believe) and I believe the conclusion was airline type crates are the most safe and even will stay closed (sometimes) if they're ejected from the vehicle. But safe driving is the MOST best way to avoid collision.

Crates do rattle, and I don't like the idea of them bending with pressure/contact. But for many types of cars, there are no alternatives. My Element is big enough that I can have any sort of crate. Rumble has hard sides, razor has soft, *but also I often let him ride loose*

I watch people come up on me fast in the rearview mirror and I am constantly sweating and saying prayers and putting the emergency flashers on just incase they didn't notice traffic slowed way down... the trunk bed is too high, an airline crate would block too much of my vision... the wire crate is bungied in pretty tight and its pretty quiet...
