city life

We don't let our cats outside because we'd lose them for sure... but occasionally, in the morning when they come to poke their noses out the door and sniff the outdoors as I let Stella out back for that first morning pee, I'll carry one of them out with me to get a better whiff. Yesterday I took Finn to sniff the leaves in those branches that hang out over the yard (a few feet to the left of the flamingo) and a cardinal flew out... yup, Finn was beside himself... an actual bird right THERE...

the bird chirped away at us from one of the higher branches... so today, sans cat, I looked into the branches and right there just a few feet above the ground is this nest and speckled eggs

I think we better keep tabs on the family, because I'd hate to let Stell run out there the day mom had just pushed them out of the nest to teach em to fly

odd that she made her nest so low to the ground

In CT they've nested low, too. Remember one year they were in that flowering bush right by the driveway.

Do you know what sort of bird? Not robin, obviously!

A real cardinal? Like a red one?

Not a lot of people know this... but it's a life's dream of mine to see a real red cardinal (are there other colors? I don't know!) in real life. I never have. I've been east coast twice, but I've missed them. And DANG you have one in your yard?? COOL!

I wish I could see it, in real life. :(

ooooh nice icon!

the girl cardinals are not the pretty bright red ones---of course, but they are darwinistic sensible brown with the faintest touches of red streaks and beaks like this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Northern_Cardinal_Female-27527.jpg

oooh! but I love that too! She's really pretty, yellow-ish and tan with red points.

I like it.
I sooooo want to see one. Bucket list.
